WELCOME TO SOLOMON SCHECHTER!
As the interim Head of School for 2011-12, I want to extend a warm welcome to all current parents, to all past parents and alumni, and especially to all visitors who are interested in finding the right school for their children. Solomon Schechter provides opportunities that are unique in St. Louis, as I’m sure you will see for yourselves.
“To kindle the eternal lights of Judaism and love of learning in each child” – these are the twin purposes of Solomon Schechter. Alongside a strong academic curriculum (language arts, social studies, math, and science), your child will receive an unparalleled grounding in Jewish studies and will learn to speak Hebrew, from Gan/Kindergarten through graduation from the eighth grade. The chance to learn and grow bilingually, in the Jewish tradition, is a gift that few schools can offer. This dual curriculum leaves our graduates with a strong sense of identity, but also an appreciation for diversity of background and belief and the confidence to meet any challenge.
Schechter serves Jewish families from all over the St. Louis area and, indeed, from all over the world. While the school is grounded in Conservative philosophy, we welcome families of any other affiliation, be it Orthodox, Traditional, or Reform. Our teaching staff is second to none among elementary schools in its quality and average years of experience; our facilities, just a decade old, provide the teachers with a fine, modern setting for the wonderful work they do.
A word about the meaning of “interim”: An interim Head holds a one-year appointment of a sort that is common among independent schools. This gives the Board the time it needs to conduct a thorough and careful search for a long-range Head. Speaking personally, I must leave the religious instruction to the Rabbis whom we are fortunate to have among our faculty. My own background, however, does include many years of study in Biblical Hebrew and a deep appreciation for its powers of narrative and emotional expression—so even though I don’t speak modern Hebrew, I feel a strong kinship with the entire culture of Solomon Schechter, and I’m delighted to be the Head of this school.
If you are in the process of checking out schools for your child, I strongly encourage you to come and visit Solomon Schechter Day School. The search for a school, at the elementary level or any other, amounts to seeking the best fit between your child and the school environment. I believe there is a good chance that you will find that best fit right here!
Sincerely
William C. Rowe, Head of School
